Brief examines the risks and barriers to effective treatment faced by children with socio-emotional problems
A new brief from the National Center for Children in Poverty, titled Social-Emotional Development in Early Childhood: What Every Policymaker Should Know, examines the prevalence of socio-emotional problems in early childhood and which family and environmental factors are associated with increased risk for these problems. Children in foster care, African-American children, and children of parents with mental illness are more likely to develop socio-emotional problems, yet these children are less likely to receive treatment for these issues. In fact, the brief's authors find that up to 97 percent of children ages three to five with identified socio-emotional needs do not receive services. Policy may play a role in this issue, for example, inadequate screening in this population is due in part to the reimbursement structure of Medicaid and other similar programs. The authors conclude the brief with policy recommendations for improving care in this population.
New model of community-based prevention shown to be effective at reducing high-risk behaviors in middle-school populations
Communities that Care, a community-based prevention program, has been shown to be effective at reducing initiation of alcohol and tobacco use among middle-school age children in 24 communities across 7 states. The program helped communities identify their particular risk factors, then facilitated the selection of evidence-based prevention programs aimed specifically at those factors. This unique prevention program shows that a strategy whereby communities tailor best practices to their own particular context can be effective at improving outcomes.
