With nearly one million substantiated cases of child abuse and neglect reported each year, preventing this problem is a high priority for all who care about the well-being of children. PPN's new issue brief, Promising Practices for Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention, provides a concise overview of the topic, including a summary of the scope of the problem, a discussion of the costs to individuals and society, and promising strategies for prevention. Two recent studies of the NIDCAP program show varied findings regarding developmental outcomes for infancy and later childhood

Two recent studies of the Newborn Individualized Developmental Care and Assessment Program (NIDCAP) had different findings about whether the program yields measurable long-term benefits. In a Pediatrics article titled "Follow-up Outcomes at 1 and 2 Years of Infants Born Less Than 32 Weeks After Newborn Individualized Developmental Care and Assessment Program," researchers examined measures of development at both 1 and 2 years of age. They found no significant differences in several measures of development between children who had participated in the program and those who did not participate, including measures of psychomotor development and neurological outcomes. In another study, published in Clinical Pediatrics and titled "Effects of the Newborn Individualized Developmental Care and Assessment Program (NIDCAP) at Age 8 Years: Preliminary Data," researchers found a significant improvement in brain functioning among a group of 8-year-old children who participated in the NIDCAP program. These mixed findings underscore the need for additional studies examining the long-term impacts of NIDCAP.

National Center for Children and Poverty introduces a new tool for measuring economic hardship

A new fact sheet by the National Center for Children and Poverty called Measuring Poverty in the United States describes some of the shortcomings of the federal poverty measure. These shortcomings include misrepresenting the resources and expenditures of households in today's economy, which leads to an underestimation of the number of families that do not have enough to cover their most basic living expenses. The fact sheet describes an alternative method of measuring poverty and provides a tool for users to calculate the amount it costs to cover basic needs in different locations across the country.
